It can lead to the development of AI that does not meet the needs and aspirations of diverse groups of older people. And when they are included, it is through limited and non-representative samples. Recently, the World Health Organisation warned that older people are being excluded from datasets to train AI technologies for healthcare. And the stereotypes we hold about older people - as technophobic or technological inept or uninterested - contribute to their digital exclusion. Despite increasing Internet use among older Australians, many face barriers to digital access because of age. Yet, reality tells a different, and more complex, story. Older people are still ridiculed for their supposed inability to understand and use technologies.

It’s no surprise then that one in two people worldwide are ageist, or that anti-ageing cosmetics are the “easiest sell in the world”.īut ageism is harmful and costly. Most of us don’t want to be old because ageing is constantly portrayed in a negative light. They lead to views of older people as disposable or irrelevant. These stereotypes oversimplify the diversity of later life. The word “old” usually evokes negative ideas of decline and dependency - or of selfishness and property wealth. In Western societies, ageism is so ingrained in our everyday life that we rarely even notice it. But it is common towards those aged 65 and over. If AI can be sexist and racist, can it also be ageist? Ageism and its harmsĪgeism relates to the stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination based on age. Still missing from this wider conversation is another type of bias: ageism.
